Connectivity options are crucial for industrial environments where computer networks, accessories and data exchange are a factor. Selecting the correct tools for the job is vitally important. Choosing the right connectivity options for a PC makes future operation more efficient and trouble free, but with a wide range of alternatives available at the market, it can be quite challenging to find the perfect solution. 

There are two main types of connectivity options: wireless and via cable. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G/4G and GPS. Cable options are almost endless, but most commonly used are power connectors, USB, HDMI, VGA, DVI, RS-232, RJ-45 and Gigabit Ethernet.

Power connectors are probably one of the most important areas to focus on. We have already covered the topic relating to choosing the right power option for industrial computers, so let’s move directly to other connectivity options.

Computers and accessories are mostly connected via cables by a wide selection of computer ports and available accessories. USB is a universal standard for most peripheral devices such as keyboards, printers, scanners, barcode scanners, digital cameras, speakers, microphones, CNC machines, external hard drives and many others. Although USB is commonly used almost everywhere, RS-232 is another type of very common communication cable mostly used in industrial applications. This kind of cable can transfer data very slowly and is mostly used to communicate with microcontrollers. RJ-45 and Gigabit Ethernet are network cables used to set up a connection between two or more computers or for internet connection. HDMI, VGA and DVI interfaces are utilised for video output and make it possible to connect monitors, projectors, TVs and other displays.

Cable connectors can also be made with an IP65 rating for units with fully sealed enclosures or for computers used in demanding environments. This ensures extra protection and allows installation of a computer and its accessories in areas where humidity, dirt, dust and other harsh conditions are a factor.

There are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G/4G and GPS options available for industrial PCs. Most of us are quite familiar with this technology as we use it daily on our laptops, tablets and smartphones. Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that enables connection to local networks and to the internet. It also can create a connection between a computer and other devices with a Wi-Fi module like a printer or camera. Bluetooth has a similar application and is used to transfer data and connect two or more devices. Bluetooth is often used indoors to replace cable connections because of the short range. 3G and 4G modules installed in industrial PCs help to connect to the internet when no other option such as Wi-Fi or cable is available. This is mobile telecommunication technology also providing access to voice and video calls thanks to an installed SIM card. And last but not least, GPS is a technology used for satellite-based navigation and location.
